About the Data
The data presented focus on the size and demographics of internal medicine training for academic years 2013/2014 through 2022/2023. Workforce data are presented in tables and figures under two subheadings: Internal Medicine Residency Programs and Fellowship Programs. Resident data specify the number of trainees by gender and type of medical school attended. Fellowship data also specify the number of trainees (by subspecialty) and distribution of trainees by gender and type of medical school attended.
The data presented in this report were drawn from the ABIM tracking database. FasTrack is an ABIM program to which program directors annually submit clinical competence evaluations for all residents and fellows. These data are used to determine who may take the ABIM certification examinations. Although all ACGME-accredited internal medicine programs in the U.S. participate in tracking, data for some trainees are not submitted fully during the collection period for a specific tracking year. As a result, the number of trainees accounted for in FasTrack is less than the actual number trained. The data presented here have been adjusted using historical reporting rates to compensate for undercounting. However, because of the variability in reporting rates, the adjustments may over- or understate the actual number of trainees in a given year. In addition, to provide the most accurate data possible, each workforce report will present the most current data available. Consequently, the data presented in the report will differ somewhat from data presented in previous years' reports. In general, counts of trainees stabilize over time; thus older data tend to be more accurate. Conclusions about the numbers of trainees should be made with these limitations of the data in mind. All data presented here refer to academic years 2013/2014 through 2022/2023, unless otherwise noted.
