Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2008 – Talmadge E. King Jr., MD, recipient of the Julius R. Krevans Distinguished Professorship in Internal Medicine award and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors. ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.
The Board of Directors, composed of physicians board certified in internal medicine and one of its subspecialties, guides ABIM's overall mission and direction as it works to improve health care quality. The Executive Committee interprets Board policy and provides high level guidance to staff on issues of strategic importance. All ABIM Directors participate in ABIM's Maintenance of Certification program, which promotes ongoing learning and in which doctors demonstrate their commitment to the Board's standards.
Dr. King, a pulmonologist, renewed his certification in 2005. ABIM has issued more than 12,000 certificates in Pulmonary Disease.

Dr. King is also chair of ABIM's Task Force on the Underserved, which identifies ways ABIM can play a role in improving the health care of the uninsured and underserved populations.
“It has been a privilege to serve on the Board of an organization that shares my dedication to high quality care for all, and I'm honored to be elected to the Executive Committee,” said Dr. King.
Dr. King's research interest is the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of inflammatory and immunologic lung injury. He has authored more than 200 publications including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, critical reviews and editorials, and has co-authored eight books. He co-edited Medical Management of Vulnerable & Underserved Patients: Principles, Practice, Population, which focuses on the treatment of patients living with chronic diseases in poor and minority populations.
He is a member of the Institute of Medicine, Association of American Physicians, and the American Clinical and Climatological Association, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of the editorial boards of THORAX, and Up-To-Date™ in Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine. Dr. King has won numerous awards, among them election to the Colorado Pulmonary Hall of Fame.
Dr. King earned his medical degree from Harvard University. He is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary disease.
