Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2008 – Catherine R. Lucey, MD, Vice Dean for Education, and Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Education at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors. ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.
The Board of Directors, comprised of physicians board certified in internal medicine and one of its subspecialties, guides ABIM's overall mission and direction as it works to improve health care quality. The Executive Committee interprets Board policy and provides high level guidance to staff on issues of strategic importance.

"Her dedication to medical education and training of the next generation of internists has helped so many trainees become better qualified physicians, and her expertise will be invaluable to our Board."
All ABIM Directors participate in ABIM's Maintenance of Certification program, which promotes ongoing learning and in which doctors demonstrate their commitment to the Board's standards. Dr. Lucey renewed her certification in geriatric medicine in 2005.
"It has been a privilege to serve on the Board of an organization that shares my passion for helping physicians develop the skills and knowledge they need for a rewarding career in medicine, and I’m honored to join the Executive Committee," said Dr. Lucey.
Dr. Lucey is a nationally recognized leader in graduate medical education. Her major areas of interest include the teaching and assessment of clinical decision-making; analysis of medical errors using the principles of cognitive psychology; and the development of strategies to teach and evaluate professionalism. She has developed new programs to teach physicians how to detect and prevent medical error and new strategies to help physicians master the cognitive skills needed to provide high quality patient care.
Dr. Lucey has been an invited lecturer at multiple institutions across the country as well as at national meetings of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, the American College of Physicians (ACP), the Society of General Internal Medicine and the Association of Professors of Medicine. In 2004, she was awarded a Master Teacher Award by the Ohio Chapter of the ACP. Her work has been published in leading professional journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and Archives of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Lucey earned her medical degree from Northwestern University. She is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine.
