Philadelphia, PA, July 6, 2015 – The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) today announced new appointments for its Specialty Boards and respective Exam Committees.
The Specialty Boards and Exam Committees are part of the ABIM governance structure. Composed of physician experts in the respective disciplines, members of the Specialty Boards provide valuable insights that enable them to define, refine and set performance standards for their specific Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.
“ABIM is evolving to meet the needs of today's physicians,” said Richard J. Baron, MD, President and CEO of ABIM. “ABIM Specialty Board members—including two public members of each Specialty Board—bring their expertise in a specific discipline to work with stakeholders in their disciplines co-creating MOC programs that are relevant and meaningful to physicians practicing in that specialty, while Exam Committee members focus on developing relevant, clinically valid and rigorous assessments of current knowledge for both Certification and MOC.”
ABIM has designated Exam Committees for 20 disciplines.
“The physicians that serve on our Specialty Boards are a direct conduit to the practice community. They help us develop programs that reflect the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to practice in their discipline. They also work directly with their medical societies to ensure we are hearing directly from on-the-ground physicians,” said Jeanne M. Marrazzo, MD, Chair of the ABIM Council. “The Specialty Boards are fostering partnerships and gathering crucial input from stakeholders to guide ABIM's work.”
