Abstract: Developers of medical certification examinations often find it necessary to revise the content of live test items. However, there is a lack of scientific foundation and clear indication from the literature about the impact of the various types of minor revisions made to live items on examinee performance. This study investigated the impact of minor item revisions on the statistical performance of items and examinees’ ability estimation using an item response theory and a medical certification exam. The implications of the study are highlighted.
