Role
ABIM Approval Committees are responsible for approving all assessment content and maintaining the blueprints for Certification, Maintenance of Certification (MOC), and Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA®) in Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. As such, they play a crucial role in defining their respective disciplines. ABIM has designated Approval Committees for 20 disciplines.
The role of the Approval Committee is to:
- Review and approve items for use on the Certification/10-Year MOC and Longitudinal Knowledge assessments.
- Propose the exam blueprint for the Specialty Board’s approval.
- Confirm the validity of exams constructed according to blueprint specifications.
- Maintain the assessment item pool within the blueprint framework as defined by ABIM.
- Provide feedback and guidance to Item-Writing Task Force members.
- Work with ABIM staff to accomplish goals.

Expertise/Qualifications
The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Approval Committee is seeking a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist.

All Approval Committee members must:
- Be currently board certified in their discipline
- Be participating in Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
- Have experience developing and/or reviewing assessment items
The selection process will consider each candidate's clinical expertise in relation to current assessment content needs. We are especially interested in candidates who spend at least 50% of their professional time in direct patient care. We also welcome those who divide their professional time across patient care, teaching, research, and administrative activities. We also seek candidates who have expertise in health equity, health disparities, and/or social determinants of health.
Requirements for ABIM Service
- Commitment to ABIM’s mission “to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care.”
- Genuine interest in professional development and standard-setting for internal medicine and its subspecialties.
- Willingness to comply with the MOC Participation Policy for Physicians Serving ABIM, if applicable, which includes a requirement that diplomates certified before 1990 who have never passed an MOC exam must take and pass an MOC exam within the first three years of ABIM service.
- Willingness to comply with ABIM’s Financial and Academic conflict of interest policies, which require relationship disclosures be updated at least annually, and prohibit participation in “board review” or “board prep” courses throughout and two years after ABIM service.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, as well as ability to meet deadlines and complete task assignments.
Time Commitment
Approval Committees typically meet in-person once a year for a two-day meeting held at the ABIM offices in Philadelphia. For in-person meetings, ABIM arranges and pays for lodging and reimburses members for meals and travel that fall within the ABIM financial guidelines. Additional committee work will be done via webinar several times a year, as needed. Approval Committee members serve an initial two-year term, which may be renewed twice up to six years of total service, pending satisfactory performance.
