On Friday October 21 at 3pm ET, ABIM held a DEI webinar to recognize Hispanic Heritage month and Disability Employment month. The conversation featured Olga Lucia Torres, a former litigator who went for treatment of her autoimmune disease and ended up with a brain injury, and Dr. Richard Baron. During the conversation, Dr. Baron and Ms. Torres discussed Ms. Torres's medical journey, difficulties in healthcare when English is not a patient's primary language, the role of narrative medicine in understanding how to communicate, how patients can and advocate for themselves and how physicians can be more inclusive.
ABIM hosted an engaging panel discussion on the impact anti-LGBTQ+ legislation will have on clinicians, trainees and patients. The panel also discussed the patient benefits of gender affirming care. Speakers included:

On March 29th ABIM staff was invited to join Celebrating Women’s History Month: ABIM Discussion Panel. Moderated by ABIM’s Rebecca Lipner, PhD, SVP, Assessment and Research, we had five inspiring guest panelists highlighted to discuss women in leadership positions within the healthcare industry. Panelists discussed their experiences, concerns, and hopes for the future for women in leadership. Panelists included:
ABIM hosted a Virtual Tour of the Paul Robeson House for ABIM staff to join, presented by Christopher Rogers, PhDc, to learn more about Paul Robeson, PhDc, the Paul Robeson House and its history, along with its commitment to the future in bringing awareness to health equity, especially within the West Philadelphia community.
Dr. Lorna Lynn, VP Medical Education Research & Staff Administrator for DEI Governance Committee, moderated a panel to discuss the influence and impact Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had on members of ABIM’s staff. The panel highlighted the following staff members:
Dr. Dunbar spoke to ABIM staff and governance about the broader context of structural racism throughout American history and events leading up to and proceeding Juneteenth. Her books—She Came to Slay and Never Caught—were distributed to staff and governance for continued learning. Juneteenth is now a traditional holiday that we will continue to observe as an organization.
Dr. Jones presented a very practical framework, using allegories, to explain sensitive and complicated ideas around racism. This conversation centered on naming racism and rooting out the common places where it operates in organizations, every day.
Dr. Stanford spoke to the ABIM Foundation Board of Trustees about her experience establishing trust in the Black communities of Philadelphia through the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium. She spoke about the barriers she faced with health systems and insurance companies as a Black woman physician and shared strategies for how institutions can involve community-based organizations to build trust with patients.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Fernandez, a member of ABIM’s Board of Directors, spoke with staff about her work in the area of health and health care disparities, including issues surrounding Latino health, immigrant health, and language barriers.
